"Richard Fountain collection"

Richard Fountain was born on May 18th 1887 and was one of thirteen brothers and sisters who lived in Victoria Street. He was always keen of football and was offered professional terms at the age of fourteen, but had to turn them down in order to go to work, as his father had passed away when the youngest twins were just two.


He was employed as a painter and decorator with Levers in High Town Road before eventually moving to Halfacre & Young. In April 1912, he married Agnes Middleton and they had three children, Eileen, Muriel and Richard, the family also residing in Victoria Street. He played for Maidenhead Norfolkians winning a West Berks League medal in 1907 and an Oxford Hospital Cup medal in 1908. He switched allegiance to the Red and Blacks and won a County Cup winners medal in 1912 and an Oxford Hospital Cup winner’s medal in 1913 as well as gaining County Representative honours. He became a committee member and served the club for many years and also enjoyed a game of cricket playing for St Mary’s who used the York Road ground during the summer. He passed away on October 8th 1956 at the age of 69.
